Do mission critical apps require a new look at service level agreements?

For some while now a recurring thought has come round to visit with me for a while, and with the kind intervention of Jason Cowie, Vice President of Product Management with US virtualisation management specialists, Embotics, it has come round once again.

That thought concerns Service Level Agreements (SLAs), and the fact that they bear so little sensible relationship to the real needs of businesses managers. Indeed, they generally add so little to their understanding of the potential business impact of what is happening with applications, and in particular mission critical applications, as to be for all practical purposes a waste of space.
